Chapter Fifteen

Garret wished the gnawing feeling something was terribly wrong would dissipate. But even as a man named Daniels led him into some kind of ranch house slash fortress, he felt nothing but a bundle of worry.

Allegedly, everything was fine. But he’d been through a North Star mission once before, and this didn’t feel like fine. It most certainly didn’t feel over. He’d been swept away from the aftermath, informed he’d be taken to North Star headquarters and reunited with his children.

He knew that was the important thing, so he’d gone along with it when Shay had ushered him into a Jeep with Daniels. Then they’d driven. And driven. And driven. Eventually, Garret had fallen asleep. Even when he’d woken up hours later, they were still driving.

Finally, they made it to an airport, where Daniels ushered him onto a tiny, old-looking plane. The pilot was a man Garret vaguely recognized from the aftermath of Nate’s ordeal.

He flew them another few hours, and then landed on a grass field behind a large...luxury ranch house? Daniels led him off the plane, the pilot having said nothing.

Garret followed Daniels toward the house. After a few security measures, the back door opened and Garret was led into some kind of mudroom. Which then turned into a hallway, followed by a cozy-looking living room.

Where he finally recognized someone. Even if it was a bit of a shock to see Elsie, cross-legged on the couch, in her usual position hunched over a computer.

She looked up when Daniels cleared his throat. Then she jumped up and shocked Garret even more when she rushed over and threw her arms around him. “You’re safe.”

Garret awkwardly patted her back. “Er. Yeah.”

She pulled away, already talking a mile a minute. “I just couldn’t stay in Blue Valley. Nate wanted to come, too, but I figured you’d want him taking care of your animals. Barney’s so sad without you guys. Anyway, Nate wanted to get your dad involved, but I convinced him to just stay put. The fewer people involved, the better. And you’ll be home soon.” She smiled up at him. “Barney will be ecstatic.”

“Thanks, Elsie. I’m glad.” Relieved. He just didn’t know how to explain any of this to his family. It was going to be hard enough with Mrs. Linley, his dispatcher at the police station.

“I’ve been helping with the babies. They’re so sweet.” She grabbed his hand and began pulling him across the room. “I know you’re exhausted. We set you up in a room with them. You can look after them, or if you prefer one of our medics can look after them until you are ready to take over. Whatever you need, North Star is going to provide.”

Garret didn’t know what to say, so he simply let himself be led. Down a long hallway with lots of doors. Finally, she quietly pushed into one. The room was dark except for a dim lamp in the corner. A young woman sat in a rocking chair, looking at her phone.
